C & O Canal Adventures Part 2: Dickerson to Mouth of Monocacy

March 17th, 2011

Todays hike brings us to another section of the C & O canal tow path.  For starters at the Dickerson side there was a much smaller parking lot than Great Falls but a lot more open parking.  The majority of the traffic on this section was bike riders so it wasn't quite as crowed as Great Falls. The views of the canal and river are quite nice here, minus the walk past the energy plant. We also spotted a few critters along the way.

Painted Turtles catching some rays
The canal is a hot spot for basking turtles and we even spotted a few muskrats running along the banks of the canal.  If you are looking for a bit more seclusion than Great Falls this might be the place for you.

Monocacy Aqueduct
The Monocacy Aqueduct was at the end of the walk and for you history buffs it is worth a visit.  If you don't feel like walking you can access the aqueduct at the small parking lot located at the end of Mouth of Monocacy Road.  Again the only issue with the canal hikes is the return walk back to the car so be prepared for some repeat scenery.

  1. It looks like we have common interests as well as common elements for our blogs. I didn't copy yours I swear!

Loved the shot of the turtles all lined up like that warming themselves in the sun. We sure don't see that kind of wildlife here on the west coast.

The weather is gradually starting to get better. Hiking prime-time is almost here. I can hardly wait! Will check back on your blog from time to time and am looking forward to hearing more about your hikes this year.

    Happy Trails!
