Fruit and nuts all rolled in to one sound like a fantastic treat. These bites are portable and can be stored at room temperature so they are great to take on the trail. The Date & Almond bars are decadent and brownie like, while the Apricot Cashew bars are sweet and tangy.<br />

1/4 cup raw almonds<br />
2 tablespoons shredded coconut<br />
2 tablespoons cocoa powder<br />
Agave nectar to taste<br />
<br />
<b>Apricot Cashew Bars</b><br />
3 ounces dried apricots<br />
1/3 cup raw cashews<br />
2 tablespoons shredded coconut<br />
Agave nectar to taste<br />
<br />
For both recipes, directions are the same.<br />
<br />
Place all ingredients into a food processor and grind until ingredients begin to stick together. If the mixture is a bit dry, you can add a sprinkle of water and process for a few more seconds. Line a loaf pan with plastic wrap and place the fruit and nut mixture in the pan. Pat the mixture down firmly and wrap the plastic over the top. Place in the freezer for 30 minutes. Take the bars out of the freezer and slice into 6 pieces. Wrap individually or store in an airtight container.Francis and Annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07917135896114554246noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1140062344870184319.post-26133499485099148812012-03-17T10:00:00.000-04:002012-03-17T10:00:01.880-04:00Creature Feature: Northern Red Salamander<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
The Northern Red Salamander (<i>Pseudotriton ruber</i>) is native to many areas along the east coast of the United States and is present in many aquatic habitats in a majority of the Appalachian mountains. This salamander tends to prefer slow moving streams containing few fish, mountain seeps, and can sometimes even be found in upland habitats near water.<br />
<br />
The juvenile red salamander is exclusively aquatic and has external gills. As the salamander grows the gills slowly shrink away and the brown juvenile attains a red color. When the juvenile first turns red the color is usually very bright but tends to fade a bit with age. The tail in the juvenile is also paddle-like to aid in aquatic locomotion where the adults tail is much more cylindrical in shape<br />

The biggest issue here was parking. The main visitor lot was gated closed and the few lots that allow trail access were spilling onto the roadways. After squeezing into a space to access the trails, it was time to decide on what trail to hike. Feeling ambitious as always, we picked a difficult trail. As far as difficulty goes, the hills are pretty steep and in some places the rocks can trip you up if you aren't careful. We didn't attempt any of the shorter loops, such as the Red Maple or White Oak trail. We started on the Black Locust trail which was, after all, rated difficult. After a long and sedentary winter, I would agree with the classification! In the interest of time we veered onto the Green Ash trail which eventually merges with the Yellow Poplar Trail. These trails were really well marked and the markers look like they are well maintained too!<br />

Sadly, where the Green trail merges with the Yellow trail, the hike takes you along Gambrill Park Road which was really not the most enjoying way to end our hike. Where had we seen this before? <a href="http://greathiking.blogspot.com/2011/06/tuckahoe-state-park-drive-and-hike.html" target="_blank">Tuckahoe State Park</a>; still fresh on our minds from last years brief roadside hiking experience. I'm sure hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders alike would prefer to avoid the close proximity to the roadways, so keep this in mind if you visit. The trails are multi use except for the White Oak trail which is limited to foot traffic only. Although horses are allowed, there is little space available for horse trailers which is also mentioned on the parks website. Dogs are allowed at Gambrill on all trails and there was no shortage of visitors and their canine companions on our visit. Even though the parking was awful we only ran into a few other hikers. With several options for trails (16 miles total) it keeps them from getting overcrowded.<br />

The views were also not the greatest. The vistas of Frederick are really not extremely breathtaking and if it were not early spring, much of the views along the trails would have been totally obscured by the trees. Overall, if you are looking for some challenging slopes to tackle and perhaps a nice place to bike for a day, Gambrill is perfect for you. If you are looking for spectacular scenic views, keep looking! I think the most important tip we have to offer is to be sure and visit on a weekday to avoid the parking issues!<br />

Fear not, we will soon be full speed ahead as soon as it warms up.<br />
<br />
I thought since we weren't going out, why not write a movie review. Many of you I assume are also cooped up indoors also. I know <i>127 Hours</i> came out over a year ago in theaters, I just heard about it from flipping through HBO's on demand list.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="240" src="http://wallpaper4god.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/127-Hours.jpg" width="400" />
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
127 hours is bsed on the true story of Aron Ralston, portrayed by James Franco, who intends to spend the day canyoneering through Canyonlands National Park. He drives in the night before and sleeps in his car and then bikes part way to shave off time. While hiking to Blue John Canyon he meets two girls and convinces them he is a guide and knows a much more scenic route to their destination. After he parts with them, he continues hopping through canyons toward his destination. Climbing down a canyon, he slips on a boulder and falls, in turn, loosening the boulder, which then plummets down towards him, trapping his arm between it and the boulder. The rest of the movie spans 127 hours with him alone in the canyon desperately trying to extricate his arm while flashing back to memorable moments in his life. In the end, he realizes that with no hope of rescue, he must amputate his own arm.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I saw the preview and thought that I really needed to see this movie. I wasn't sure if it was going to be any good or not, but I was intrigued. For a movie that focuses on one main character, I was blown away. Though you see Ralston trapped in the canyon for most of the time, there is such an intensity to it that you don't miss other characters. His story is fortified with flashbacks he has of memories he shared with important people and hallucinations.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Emotionally charged and inspiring, I think this movie is a must see. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
In it there is also very important lesson that any outdoorsy person needs to remember and that is: Always tell someone where you are going.</div>

Hope everyone is off to a great start in the new year. We have been on hiking hiatus for a short while. While trying to amuse ourselves with Sprocket, I (Ann) tripped and sprained my ankle. Needless to say, I was staying off of my foot and am going a little stir crazy and am anxious to get out.<br />
<br />
<b>Hike Date: July 28, 2011</b><br />
<br />
What happens to a couple of hikers who try to hike a portion of the AT (that's Appalachian Trail for those of you not in-the-know)? Read on and find out!<br />
<br />
Francis and I have been dying to get onto the AT for some time now. We always talk about it and then end up going somewhere else. While on a determined mission to log data for the <a href="http://www.fieldherpforum.com/forum/" target="_blank">North American Field Herp Forum</a>, Francis was choosing areas that did not have a lot of data. Faquier County, Virginia had absolutely no data logged. What a perfect place to go, spend some time herping and hiking the AT.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
So we leave the house at somewhere between 8:30 and 9am. We planned on a two hour drive and planned on leaving earlier (don't we always?). It took us over two hours to get there driving mostly back roads after getting off of Route 66. This tiny little park doesn't scream at you from the road. It is sandwiched between a hill and a cow pasture. There is a small pond stocked with trout; the few that were left this late in the season were belly up, gasping for air in the anoxic water. <br />
<br />
The map at the trailhead leaves a lot to be desired with little in the way of defined trails, distances or landmarks. There are no trail maps to take with you so get a good look at the one posted before you start.<br />
<br />
Once we got goinging, we hiked around the pond and got started on the trail. Therre was no gradual incline, it was immediately steep. Keep in mind this is super hot day! We hadn't gotten Sprocket yet, but unless your dog is super fit, I wouldn't recommend taking them. <br />
<br />
There was one main trail and some offshoots that were either completely overgrown and non navigable. We weren't even sure if we were on the right trail to get to the AT. <br />
<br />
We kept going up and up with no indication of how far ahead the AT was. I'd say we hiked for an hour to an hour and a half and I had had enough. I wasn't exactly happy about crapping out and I was really peeved that we hadn't gotten to the AT. We got back down to the pond probably an hour later feeling disappointed. So to feel better, we flipped some longs and rocks and found some reptiles.<br />
<br />
After getting home and taking a long nap and a shower we were reviewing our hike and we realized that we were probably pretty dang close to the AT itself which just made me more determined to get back out there and try again...maybe somewhere else though....and closer to home.<br />
<br />
Some recommendations: Find an access point that is well used. This may make for a crowded hike on a weekend so plan a weekday hike. Don't go on an especially hot day, that will just make for a miserable time. Take plenty of water - I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Camelbak. You should totally get one before hiking season gets underway. And bring food. You will get hungry and you'll be in the middle of nowhere.<br />

This beautiful snake in one of the few venomous species that can be found while hiking in Maryland and Virginia. Although considered a common species, these snakes are seldom seen due to their preference for nocturnal activity. The most common times people come into contact with this snake is usually during the spring and fall when these snakes tend to be more active during the day due to cooling temperatures at night.<br />

The copperhead snake is very often confused with the extremely common northern watersnake usually seen around almost any body of water. Here are a few images showing some of the physical differences. Most importantly, to avoid being bitten by any snake just simply give it a wide berth, do not try to handle or harm the snake and both you and the snake will have a great day sharing the outdoors together! <br />

There are several subspecies of copperhead that occur throughout the United States. The southern copperhead readily crossbreeds with the northern subspecies and can also be found on the Coastal Plain regions of Maryland and Virginia.<br />

exciting news!</strong> We have a new addition to our hiking crew. His name
is Sprocket. He is a seven-month-old otterhound that we recently
adopted. He will be accompanying us on many of our hikes. With that
in mind, we will add a Dog Friendly rating to our current rating system.
So many people like to take their dogs with them when they hike and it is
sometimes hard to know what places are good and if they even allow dogs.<o:p></o:p></div>

Yesterday we went to Marshy Point Park located on the Chesapeake
Bay in Baltimore, Maryland. It is part of the Chesapeake Gateways
Network. A certain someone told us that this place would be a great place to find salamanders. Little information was available online prior to our visit but
when we got there, there were lots of trail maps and other information about
the park. The trails are all relatively short. Many have boardwalks
to give you the ability to see the bay and the Saltpeter and Dundee Creeks that
run through the park. One boardwalk ended abruptly with no ramp or steps
to get you back onto the ground except a ramp made out of haphazardly
placed 6"x2" boards. <o:p></o:p></div>

mind, this time of year with so many leaves on the ground, there could be lots
of things hiding under them…Like tree roots.
While I – Ann, was jogging with Sprocket down the trail, I failed to see
the root that tripped me. I went down
like I was sliding into home plate. I
lost the dog’s leash, my sunglasses went flying, the whole front of me was
covered in dirt. I was a mess. Luckily the dog didn’t run off and the only
thing wounded was my pride.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;">
There was no mention of pet policies on the website or on the
literature at the park and no signs posted that said pets were not
allowed. We took Sprocket with us and park employees did see him and made
no comment but I was doing some research before writing this blog this
morning and saw that on the Chesapeake Bay Gateways website it says that
pets are not permitted in the park. I have yet to call them to find out
which is correct. So this is the deception, there were no salamanders there! I guess it could be because it really is the wrong time of year to be finding them, but you can find all sorts of things including amphibians if you make the right effort. But still, disappointing nonetheless. <o:p></o:p></div>

decided to head to Gunpowder Falls State Park, located only four miles away.
We visited the Hammerman Area. This was also
a disappointing visit. There was one trail that
was visible from the one way road. The Muskrat Trail was uneventfully short.
It went around what looked like a trash pile/maintenance yard and dead-ended
at a blind that looked out into a marsh of invasive<i> Phragmites australis.</i> Last year we
visited the Hereford Area of Gunpowder, which was much nicer. Even after
being up almost all night and getting up after fiveish hours of sleep and hung-over
we hiked a 12 mile section of trail that followed a stream and had a great
time.</div>

This fascinating species of snake is primarily aquatic, usually only leaving the water in search of prey or finding a mate. Found from Southern Virginia all the way into Florida, the Mud snake primarily inhabits swamps where there is an abundance of sirens and amphiumas, the Mud snakes favorite prey. These snakes are very strong snakes but rarely, if ever, bite when handled. The most common reaction to being handled is that the Mud snake will poke it's captor with its harmless pointed tail. Moving from bodies of water primarily at night also make this species one that is rarely encountered by people but is also a reason why these snakes suffer a high road mortality rate. While these snakes are believed to exist in high numbers little is known about their actual population numbers due to their secretive existence.<br />
<br />
Lesser Known Fact: Mud Snakes have been witnessed using their pointed tail as an anchor in the mud for extra leverage while subduing prey.Francis and Annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07917135896114554246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1140062344870184319.post-37980048035941939212011-11-14T18:03:00.000-05:002012-01-11T08:56:21.151-05:00Blood, Sweat, & Gators: Hiking the Florida Everglades<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

One of the most memorable aspects about hiking the Everglades isn't actual blood, it's donating it to the mosquitoes. While the mosquito level was high, at least it wasn't insane everywhere. Most of the hikes in the everglades are easy access, paved, boardwalks, and a few unpaved beaten paths. One of the longer trails on our visit was totally flooded which was very disappointing. <br />
<br />
Making the trip from the entrance of ENP driving all the way to Flamingo in Monroe county we hit every trail we could. Most of the trails were in the sun, so be sure to bring some sunscreen. The shaded trails proved to be the worst for mosquitoes, and after a few minutes on something as simple as the Gumbo Limbo Trail, jogging was the best option to escape the little flying blood suckers. You may as well leave the bug spray at home because I think that the mosquito buzzing...is just them laughing at you for trying. So unless you want to wear a full bug protection suit I would highly advise to avoid any shaded trails.<br />

The major attraction to the Everglades is the abundant wildlife. Everywhere you look there is an interesting bird, reptile, or amphibian. There is nothing more exciting than seeing an anole scurry away out of the corner of your eye every step you take or having a snake slither across a trail in front of you. Florida is known for these creatures, but don't expect them to fall into your lap! During our weekend in the glades we only saw about 10 snakes, and we were actually looking for them! It certainly isn't like most television shows make it seem. There are not invasive killer pythons around every turn and deadly venomous snakes aren't falling from the trees. </div>

If you are a birder, get in your car, book a flight, do whatever it takes to reach the Glades and visit this park! I recommend to go between January and March, which is Florida's dry season, meaning a lot loss mosquitoes! If you are looking for large mammals this might not be the best place to visit.<br />

I would also strongly recommend that when you get to Flamingo to give up the dirt trails and try some of the water trails. This is a fantastic way to get an opportunity to see the endangered American Crocodile. There are canoes for rent at the boathouse in Flamingo, so while you are there give it a paddle!<br />

There is virtually no challenge to any of the trails in the everglades, everything is flat! The only issue is that the trails may test your stamina when it comes to the heat or test your patience when it comes to the buzzing blood sucking mosquitoes. </div>

<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">Well, as Ann mentioned, Chapin Forest is beautiful. I enjoyed getting to hike through the habitat and see a bit of the variation when compared to the usual Maryland mixed oak and hardwood forests. The trail itself offers some hills but no other difficult challenges such as rough, rocky terrain. Some of the trails are paved, but all are heavily traveled and according to the laws of this park system, you cannot have any off the beaten path adventures. Sticking to the trails, getting a view of the Cleveland Skyline, and getting a glimpse of Ohio's nature make this park a great place for a nice day hike. As with most parks with heavy foot traffic the animals are a bit used to seeing people so spotting some white tailed deer, birds, and a few other local amphibians and reptiles along the trail is almost guaranteed. Overall, it makes for a nice day out, maybe even bring the family along or take the dog out for a nice day adventure!<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">When it comes to the trails, there are several options. Not only are the trails blazed but they are named as well. If you want to avoid the bikers and horseback riders there are a few trails designated for hikers only. If you lack a sense of direction and are indifferent to the outdoors but want to learn more, there are guided hikes offered by park rangers in the area as well. This is not a bad way to learn a little about the area especially if you have a large group out for the day. There are several access points as well so be sure to plan accordingly. If you want a quick reward and just want to rush up to the Cleveland skyline view take the Lucky Stone Loop Trail from the East Entrance. If want to hike for a while most trails, while short, are linked together.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sharon Conglomerate of the Chapin Ledges</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">Chapin Forest is located on Gildersleeve Mountain which is one of the only areas of higher elevation around Cleveland. While the Cleveland skyline is the most popular view, the Chapin Ledges also offer a stunning view. These ledges can be seen at the beginning and end of the Lucky Stone Loop Trail. The major rock exposure is Sharon conglomerate, which is made up of a sandstone matrix surrounding quartz pebbles. This is the rock type that forms the ledges, likely formed by rapid moving water. Glaciation played a large role in how these rocks look today. Rocks have been spit apart by this act of weathering creating 30 foot rock faces and even deeper crevasses. This area is closed to park visitors unless accompanied by a park ranger but can be seen and appreciated from the trail.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">Another predominant rock exposure in the park is Berea sandstone. This rock has been heavily quarried in Ohio, and still is, due to it's ability to resist weathering. At the first parking lot from the Rt. 306 entrance you will find an old quarry that is now a pond. Stone quarried from this area was used as the foundation of many local buildings including the Kirtland Temple.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

I really appreciate being able to say kiss my you know what to the mega-conglomerate companies by making things myself.<br />
<br />
If you like nuts, I am sure you've seen the expensive seasoned ones in the pretty gem-colored containers available in grocery stores or the fresh ones hot out of the kettle at the fair. They are the perfect pick me up while out hiking, so why not make them yourself. It's easy and delicious and will take you little time.<br />
<br />
I used almonds for both recipes but you can certainly use any type you like.<br />

Fall is coming and the leaves are changing colors and all of a sudden it seems that everyone is out hiking again. Sugarloaf Mountain attracts many people from the Washington D.C. area with nice views of the countryside. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">There are several miles of trail to hike and all of the trails are very well maintained and well marked. If you can maintain a fast pace most of the trails can be completed in a day. Maps are also usually provided at most trail heads and the trails are rated from easy to difficult. The most difficult trails (red and orange) provide direct access to the east view of the valley. </span><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Due to the high volume of people that visit the area our best recommendation is to try to get out during the week because parking can sometimes be difficult on holidays and weekends. Due to the high volume of people on the trail don't expect to see a lot of wildlife other than some birds and the occasional deer. </span><br />

When I am stuck inside unable to hike, I like to experiment with lots of different recipes. Beef jerky is one of the best things you can take hiking with you. It is high in protein, easy to carry, and relatively stable at room temp. It is however, expensive to buy already made. You get a measly three or so ounces for five or six bucks. A three pound cut of brisket will yield approximately one pound of jerky.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW5FLWSZLjqisQ8eWhRFe5_ngZjyiY9LBykeFOCd5c45J9htyobL7TrKeI-gakO_vPXi1IMYfcKZQLcHUfWa4XtgaSqJH-A7m5AK6KQzTmDIXMiSmG9SU9NhEFaD4iGUNVUUvxhQspR_RY/s1600/IMG_4460.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW5FLWSZLjqisQ8eWhRFe5_ngZjyiY9LBykeFOCd5c45J9htyobL7TrKeI-gakO_vPXi1IMYfcKZQLcHUfWa4XtgaSqJH-A7m5AK6KQzTmDIXMiSmG9SU9NhEFaD4iGUNVUUvxhQspR_RY/s320/IMG_4460.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
I recommend keeping your eye on the grocery store adds for when beef brisket cuts are on sale. You can usually get a good deal if you pay attention. Have your butcher cut all of the visible fat off the cut of meat and slice the meat against the grain in ~1/4 inch slices. You can do this at home if you like, but having the butcher do it, it will save you time and hassle trying to slice evenly.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I recommend getting an original flavored jerky seasoning kit. You can use any flavor you like; they come in a variety such as hickory, mesquite but I really like to create my own. The jerky kit comes in two packets: the seasoning and the cure. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3 lb beef brisket, fat removed and sliced</div>
<div>
4 tablespoons jerky seasoning</div>
<div>
4 teaspoons jerky cure</div>
<div>
1 teaspoon onion powder</div>
<div>
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder</div>
<div>
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flake</div>
<div>
1 teaspoon hot sauce</div>
<div>
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce </div>
<div>
2 tablespoons honey</div>
<div>
1 1/2 cups white vinegar</div>
<div>
1 cup water</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Placed sliced meat in a large non-reactive bowl. In a separate container, combine the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Pour over the meat. Cover and refrigerate for one to two days.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
AFter mainating the meat, drain the liquid. You can dehydrate the meat in one of two ways. You can either use a dehydrator or use your oven. I use a Nesco Snackmaster dehydrator, which uses convection heat set at 155 degrees; set your oven to 175 degrees. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Pat the meat dry and then lay out on racks. If you are using your oven, you can lay the meat out on metal cooling racks placed on a large cookie sheet. You can then sprinkle the meat with additional seasonings such as cracked pepper, red pepper, and even Old Bay.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The meat will take anywhere from 4-8 hours to dehydrate. Once it is done, let it cool, then place it in zip top bags and place in the refrigerator where you can safely store it for a month or so though it is usually all gone long before then here.</div>Francis and Annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07917135896114554246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1140062344870184319.post-24532712946292818392011-09-15T18:31:00.002-04:002012-01-11T08:56:21.108-05:00Ann's Savage HikeHike Date: August 6, 2011<br />
<br />
After a short day at work on Saturday, my friend Angela and I drove a short way to Savage Park in Savage-Guilford, Maryland to stretch our legs. The Wincopin Trail-head is off Vollmerhausen Road half a mile from Savage-Guilford Road. In total, this area of the park offers over three miles of trails. <br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
From the trail-head, take the paved path to the dirt path. Stay on the right path, as the left one goes to private property. This will lead you to the Red Trail which will take you down to the banks of the Middle Patuxent River. It will loop back around on itself and you will then back track to the Blue Trail which sits higher than the river giving you a beautiful view from above. The Blue Trail will connect to the Green Trail in two different places. Take the first connection to enjoy more time by the water and make your hike longer or the second connection to shorten your hike and get back to the Red Trail to get back to the parking lot.<br />
<br />
There are many opportunities to see wildlife here. Some species you may see include the Red-tailed and Red-shouldered hawk, ospreys, salamanders, toads, frogs and maybe even a snake or two.<br />
<br />
Sorry that there aren't any photos for this hike, I was too busy chatting and enjoying the scenery that I forgot to whip out my camera!<br />

<br /></div>
The Diamondback Terrapin (<i>Malaclemys terrapin</i>) is a very unique turtle. Occupying primarily coastal habitats from Massachusetts all the way down South along the coastline through Texas this species has adapted well to survive in brackish estuaries, bays, and rivers. There are seven subspecies of Diamondback terrapins, but here in the Northeast we have the Northern subspecies. These turtles love to eat a variety of crustaceans and mollusks with their powerful jaws which have evolved to crush this type of hard shelled prey. Females tend to be larger than males attaining a size of about nine inches in shell length. These turtles typically nest in sandy habitat in the spring and their babies hatch mid to late summer. <br />
<br />
In Maryland there are many projects underway to help protect the terrapins native to the Chesapeake Bay. Many organizations spend a lot of time protecting nesting habitat by installing protective fences around nests to keep out predators like foxes and raccoons. One of the biggest threats is not just the collecting by humans for consumption but the loss of habitat due to the disappearance of the islands in the bay as a result of sea level rise and powerful storms eroding away viable nesting habitat. Many of the islands acted as a sanctuary for nesting turtles. On the islands many animals that predate turtle eggs are absent from these islands which greatly increases turtle hatch numbers.<br />
<br />
One of the most important projects has been the recreation of these islands. Poplar Island is one of the bigger projects which is restoring a lot of lost habitat. For more information visit the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service website which has more information on the project.<br />

<br />
Lesser Known Fact: Not only has the Terrapin been the University of Maryland's Mascot since 1933, it was also designated as the official state reptile of Maryland in 1994! <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Chincoteague Pony</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Mid July, we decided to take a road trip to Chincoteague Island, Virginia. Chincoteague was made famous by Marguerite Henry with her books about the wild ponies of Assateague Island. Once a year, I like to get to the beach to relax. I could care less about the actual laying out activity, it is just a peaceful place to go, listening to the water and smelling the salty air.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
While we were there, of course we had to check out the trails. Frankly, to call them trails is a bit silly. These are paved paths designed for tourists who probably want to do minimal work for the maximum viewing pleasure. Bicycles are one of the most popular means of travel around both the town of Chincoteague and Assateague Island which makes these "trails" easily accessible for them. One thing to keep in mind about any of these trails is that they are plagued by large numbers of mosquitoes. While we normally try to shy away from using bug spray, it was absolutely necessary here. A couple we passed on one of the trails said that DEET was no longer effective against them, we found that it was better than nothing.<br />

The Lighthouse Trail is the shortest trail in the refuge, but this one offers a bit more (though a very small bit) terrain variety and is unpaved, which is a bonus. It takes you to the Assateague Lighthouse. Once adjacent to the water, it is now surrounded by land, as the barrier island has grown about 5 miles since the lighthouse was built in 1867.<br />

If you are lucky, you will get a chance to see the Delmarva fox squirrel. This is an endangered species that was released here to help increase the population. The Woodland Trail is a one-and-a-half mile loop that takes you to an observation deck that offers a view of the salt marsh, where the wild ponies spend some of their time. Keep going around the loop and it will take you to an unpaved, unmarked trail that leads you to Tom's Cove. The first thing you see is an old watch house that was used by oystermen to protect their oyster beds from poachers. Bring your binoculars to get a glimpse of the Ospreys nesting atop the house. Cormorants can also be seen on the posts surrounding the house. Walk along the beach here and you will see horseshoe crabs and may see a diamondback terrapin swimming along with their head poking out of the water.<br />
<br />
Take the 3 1/2 mile Wildlife Loop to see the many waterfowl and wading birds that use the water impoundments. Egrets, herons, and ibis are the most common. There are also many short trails branching off of this loop that take you to different types of habitat.<br />

While we were on the Eastern Shore, we decided to hit up a couple of Maryland's hiking spots also. The first, a short drive from Chincoteague, was Pocomoke State Park in Worchester County. Part of Pocomoke State Forest, preserved land is 15,000 acres total. Bordering the Pocomoke River, habitats include loblolly pine forest and cypress swamp. While, not exactly the challenge we were looking for, we took the "Nature Through Time" trail. It is a self-guided trail that leads you through part of the forest and cypress swamp. Brochures at the trailhead give you descriptions of different spots throughout the trail and brief history of the area.<br />

The next and last Maryland hiking destination we stopped at on our way home from the beach. We stopped at Wye Island Natural Resource Management Area to stretch our legs when we were about half way home. Just a short trip from the Bay Bridge and located in Queen Anne's County it offered a quiet place to explore. We took the Schoolhouse Woods Trail around the swampy area and then took the Holly Tree Trail back to the car. The Holly Tree Trail has some of the oldest growth trees in Marlyland. The trail offers glimpses of the estuary surrounding the Island. Be careful on the rickety bridge; best not to jump on it while your partner is on said bridge thinking it is going to come crashing down. Oops! While we didn't spend enough time hear to give it it's own blog entry, we will definitely be back so be sure to stay tuned for a complete review.<br />

The Five-lined Skink is one of the most versatile lizard species in the United States with a range from Southern Texas North into Canada. These lizards are well adapted to their environment throughout their range. The Five-lined Skink has many forms so don't be fooled into thinking you are seeing a different species! The beautiful juvenile with its yellow stripes and bright blue tail grows up into a lizard with a more uniform brown color. During the spring breeding season the brown colored males show off a bright red head as well!<br />
<br />
In some cases you may actually be seeing a Broad-headed Skink which can look very similar to the five lined with some subtle differences in scale arrangement, coloration, and overall maximum size. This little lizard can be commonly found in sunny areas basking on logs and likes to eat many types of insects, worms, spiders, and sometimes even baby mice!</div>

Over the years I have started this hike by taking the Snake Root Loop trail and then climbing the mountain up the challenging Fire Tower Trail. On my most recent visit, the Fire Tower Trail was closed so I headed down to the bottom of the hill to hike from the Meadow Mountain Trail up. Much of this trail is forested and hilly but not extremely rocky. In some areas there are boardwalks because the trail can be quite muddy in the springtime. For miles of trail it is rare to encounter many other hikers so the seclusion is nice.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
Many deer can be seen along this hike and even the occasional turkey or black bear so if you are quite you may be rewarded with some stunning wildlife. Much of the other trails are the same easy terrain, including the Old Brant Mine as well as the rest of the walk behind the campgrounds. As far as a challenge goes there isn't much with the Fire Tower Trail being closed, but the scenery is very rewarding. If visiting the area I strongly recommend this park for a nice day hike. <br />

New Germany State Park is nearby and offers some hiking. The website advertises steep rocky terrain and after hiking the yellow and red trails for the first time this year, I can tell you other than some small gravel underfoot this trail was not rocky and only mildly challenging (the park advertised these trails as "most difficult") so other than some enjoyable scenery don't get your hopes up if you are looking for a challenge.</div>

Swallow Falls State Park is one of the most popular tourist parks in the area and the main attraction is the largest waterfall in Maryland. The largest waterfall at Swallow Falls state park is actually the Muddy Creek Waterfall with a total height of 54 feet! The hiking here is easy, mostly flat terrain with a few nice river views but expect some company because not only is this place popular for hiking but many people also enjoy taking a swim in the river. Day trip with the family yes, a good extensive hike with seclusion it is not, better head back to Deep Creek Lake State Park if you are looking for a quiet day out!<br />

Big Pool is a lake for those of you not familiar with the area so don't be suprised that there isn't any diving boards or lifeguards when you get there! The area is very popular for kayaking, fishing, and biking. The trails were flat, mosquitoes were hungry, but that didn't stop us from hiking a few miles! There were several turtles seen along the canal and we were even treated to a wild turkey gobbling as we hiked along! Not a bad place to visit but not much to offer in the way of hiking and variety in scenery.<br />

One of the most challenging and rewarding day hikes near DC is right along the C & O Canal at Great Falls, MD. If you are native to the Greater DC area, you've probably heard about this trail. Billy Goat Trail A offers a variety of flat terrain and some moderate rock climbing for a nice hike/work out. Even though dogs, horses, and bikes are prohibited on the trail, expect some company. Due to the areas proximity to DC it attracts a lot of visitors just to see the Falls area so our best advice is to avoid this hike on the weekends if possible.<br />

Be aware that heavy rains will cause the Potomac River to rise, flooding the trail and forcing the Park Service to close it. Also, due to the sensitive habitat, be sure to stay on the trail. While the trail isn't always a dirt path, often it goes over rocky outcroppings, it is well marked with light blue blazes.<br />

Keep your eyes open for views of the many species of wildlife you could see while visiting the park. Species you may see include blue & green herons, white-tailed deer, a variety of reptiels and amphibians and if you are lucky you may hear some of the many frogs and birds calling depending on the time of year you visit.<br />

If the trail proves to be too much of a challenge, don't worry, about half way through the trail, there is an emergency exit that will take you straight to the canal towpath.<br />
<br />
If you can stick it out, the view from atop the Mather Gorge is well worth it.<br />
<br />
Overall this is one of our favorite hikes and we make it a point to do this one at least twice a year. Don't forget some good hiking shoes with the tread in good shape! One other note is that you may want to apply a little bug spary on your legs becaue ticks and chiggers might be around during the summer months! Happy Hiking!<br />

It was one of our favorite hikes last year. So we decided to return again this year to experience it again and share it with you.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Patapsco Valley State Park was Maryland's first state park; established in 1907. Located in Carroll County, Maryland, it is the northern most area of the park out of the six (The others are the Daniels, Hilton, Pickall, Avalon, and Hollofield areas).</div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
We started out by taking the Switchback Trail from the parking lot which leads to a lowland swampy area. There are many rocky outcroppings, perfect for all kinds of wildlife. From this trail, we took the short Rapids Trail to follow the river, and you guessed it...it offers a view of Patapsco River rapids. The trail goes across a large section of rocks so don't forget to wear proper footwear. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
The Rapids Trail ends back at the Switchback Trail where the Main Branch and the South Branch of the river converge. The Switchback continues to follow the river and you can either diverge from the river by the Plantation Trail, which includes a steep climb to the highest ridge in the McKeldin area, or continue on the Switchback Trail, which also goes upland to follow a paved road back to the parking lot. Last summer, we took the plantation Trail and were in for a big surprise at the workout that followed. This time we took the Switchback Trail back to the car to get back home to enjoy time out in our personal veggie garden.</div>
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Keep in mind that horses are permitted on some parts of the trail. We were almost run off the trail by two horses and their riders galloping along while they screamed at us. Anyway, the only other complaint I can think of is the rock quarry nearby. Even on a Sunday, the booming could be heard throughout the park for most of the time we were there.</div>

An important note: Some time ago an invasive plant was introduced into the area called Wavy Leaf Basket Grass. Very easy to identify by the wavy leaves this plant should be avoided to prevent further spread of this unwanted visitor. The sticky seeds act as hitch hikers on clothing, legs, and pretty much anything it touches, are present from September through November so be aware to check your shoes and clothing before leaving for this plants unwanted seed pods! <br />

I have experimented with a recipe so that With small amounts of tweaking, you can change the granola bars to suit your tastes. As always, we appreciate your comments and if you try the bars and like them let me know. If you make changes, let me know about that too because it is something I might like too!<br />
<br />
<b>Trail Granola Bars</b><br />
2 cups oats<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_HKIf4JD0hIlKIgMztqvY7PExTJdZATslSx5Lamd4UKa7ApgIamkOeTeu_ZX2q04CPA68C2VhXIMFrCIhMcxR7XFj1wLYXEiydZi0Vmpwx1z6GSzKcSGqpXAC3x6OGBOz-TjAqcuNGNsz/s1600/IMG_3918.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_HKIf4JD0hIlKIgMztqvY7PExTJdZATslSx5Lamd4UKa7ApgIamkOeTeu_ZX2q04CPA68C2VhXIMFrCIhMcxR7XFj1wLYXEiydZi0Vmpwx1z6GSzKcSGqpXAC3x6OGBOz-TjAqcuNGNsz/s320/IMG_3918.JPG" width="320" /></a>1 cup raw nuts (of your choice, I mix them up)<br />
1/2 cup shredded coconut<br />
1/2 cup ground flax seed<br />
1/2 cup wheat germ<br />
1 tsp ground cinnamon<br />
3 tablespoons unsalted butter<br />
1/2 cup maple syrup<br />
2.5 tablespoons honey<br />
1/4 cup packed brown sugar<br />
2 teaspoons vanilla<br />
salt to taste<br />
1 1/2 cups dried fruit, chopped (I mix berries and dates or figs)<br />
<br />
<br />
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Combine first 6 ingredients on a cookie sheet and toast in oven for 10-15 minutes until golden brown.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, place the next four ingredients into a small saucepan over medium heat until it comes to a bubble. Remove from heat and add vanilla. <br />
<br />
Remove toasted mixture from oven and place in mixing bowl. Reduce heat to 300 degrees F. Pour syrup mixture over oat mixture and stir until thoroughly mixed. Add the chopped fruit and mix well. <br />
<br />
Spray a 9" x 13" pan with cooking spray and press granola mixture firmly into pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden. Cool granola bars in pan for at least 2-3 hours or overnight before cutting.<br />
Makes 12 bars<br />
<br />
<br />
Options:<br />
If you don't like coconut, take it out and add more nuts. <br />
If you don't like fruit, take it out and add more nuts.<br />
*Note: If you remove the fruit, the granola bars will be crunchier than chewy<br />
Use peanut butter in place of the honey<br />
<br />

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
The Eastern Kingsnake is a fascinating species native to the East Coast of the United States. This nonvenomous snake is a medium sizes snake with an average adult size ranging from 36"-48". If you don't like snakes, one good reason to like the kingsnake is that their diet consists mainly of other snakes with venomous snakes being one of their favorite menu items! The Eastern Kingsnake will also mimic the behavior of other snakes, twitching its head around like a venomous snake and shaking its tail fast in leaf litter, mimicking a rattlesnakes rattle. </div>
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Usually very calm snakes, the kingsnake is not know to bite unless provoked. If you find one in the wild please leave it wild, but if you desire to have one as a pet some people captive breed snakes so this would be a good way to acquire one to keep as a pet! It was a real treat to see these snakes in the wild on one of our hikes and we hope to see more slithering around out there!</div>

Another important note is that a cats eye is not always an indication that a snake is venomous (many pythons have these types of irises). So to play it safe, know what snakes are in the area you are hiking and leave any wild snakes untouched and unharmed!</div>Francis and Annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07917135896114554246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1140062344870184319.post-59494919691402577472011-06-04T22:24:00.034-04:002012-01-11T08:56:21.233-05:00A Weekend Away: Hiking the Croatan National Forest in NC<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCxMtdjlkOCkFWlN5Hr0S4F9Vg3BuEH9bQp4zJigs_O9EEdZxBNPKmNv4Dz6rTR9IkqQFxPUQpLo3OmhhI3Wj3aaf4VhfmcgEXjepUNzG2hvUoQE0MDsgW_zvYWNyo2w4pvCJYrs96Yztb/s1600/IMG_0995.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
So the adventure starts with our seven hour drive down to North Carolina from Maryland. Upon arrival we ran into a bit of a problem. We had planned to camp for the weekend and the park doesn't take reservations for campsites in the forest so when we got to our first campsite option, Cedar Point, it was full. The campsite here was more of an RV park actually. So with two more campsites to choose from we headed over to the Neuse River campground only to find it was closed due to tornado damage. </span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">After that failure, we headed over to the Fisher’s Landing Campground. The campground here didn't have much to offer, the toilet was a glorified outhouse and the only running water came from a water fountain with a spigot at the bottom. The campground was really more of a field with some tables and fire rings set up but since this isn't a camping review site I will just say that we were able to set up camp and had a place to eat and sleep. </span></div>

<div style="margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The forest has several trails, which are maintained for hiking and so you don’t have to blaze your own trail. Our first morning out we started easy with the Patsy Pond Nature Trail. Really a simple hike around a lake and some nice looking pine forest for a backdrop made for an easy start. The blue and green trails were marked fairly well and the yellow trail was up until it dead-ended. Unsure if someone moved the signs (one of the yellow markers appeared to have been target practice for someone since it sported three bullet holes), or if we made a mistake following the trail we ended up heading back the way we came off trail (not that we recommend this sort of thing to the average hiker) and followed the rest of the short loop on the way out. Overall not a bad short trail to take between breakfast and lunch. </span><br />

After Patsy Pond Nature Trail and a nice picnic lunch, we were ready for our next hike. The Cedar Point Trail is a pretty short trail containing two loops which in total don't exceed two miles. The trail cuts through some pine forest and there are a few boardwalks which cross over some sunny marsh habitat. One of the cool things about this trail was all of the little critters we spotted. There were several lizards, a few snakes, and on the exposed marsh mud there were hundreds of fiddler crabs! This was a neat little trail and if you like to take pictures you could occupy your afternoon until dinner, which we did!</div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">The trail takes you along a beautiful stream and the cypress trees were also quite stunning! After spending a bit of time hiking along the stream we took one of the trails upland and completed the bigger perimeter loop for the area. There were some bugs buzzing around but it wasn't so bad that it ruined the hike. </span></div>

<div style="margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Our last morning in the Croatan was well spent hiking the first few miles of the Neusiok Trail. This twenty mile trail is part of the Mountains to Sea Trail and is more of a backpacking trail, camping is permitted anywhere along the trail. We only hiked for a few miles and found it quite enjoyable. The trail does divide for hikers and horseback riders so you aren't sharing the trail for some of the way which was kind of nice. </span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The trail is supposed to be blazed with white circles, but some of the blazes were made out of tin, some are circles and some are shaped into arrows but it was easy enough to follow with no risk of getting lost. </span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">One major issue with this hike was that when we got close to water the yellow biting flies seemed to be out in decent enough numbers to keep us swatting and reapplying bug spray (which I usually hate to do unless it is to prevent chiggers!) but overall the bugs weren't so horrible to make for a bad experience. Our best advice would be to avoid hiking here in the heat of summer when the bugs are at their worst!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Overall the weekend was fantastic. It called for rain everyday and then ended up being sunny. We had one night of rain after we already turned in and a sprinkling here or there but otherwise perfect. Beware of the minimalist camping should you make it into a weekend adventure. There is wildlife everywhere so if you want to see what NC has to offer, this is a great place to look.</span><br />

We began with the short and simple lake shore trail which begins and ends in a parking lot. The habitat had lots of potential but the wildlife seemed to be lacking in the area. The short walk throught the pines and woodlands is nice but way too short. </div>

After that we began our real adventure over to the Orange trail. One of my favorite things about the trails here is that they can lead you in one big loop so you don't have to see the same scenery twice. The trails leads you through Adkins Arboretum, and for the plant enthusiast it is worth a visit. A lot of the plants are labeled and can make this part of the trail educational as well. </div>

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
One of my least favorite things about this trail is the seemingly excessive horse traffic and horse manure along the trail. There is a horse farm nearby so these trails are used very heavily by riders and some spots of the trail have seen some damage from the excessive hoof use. Some trails were restricted to foot traffic and whenever possible these were the trails we used. Near the end of our hike we came out onto a road and felt a bit confused only to find the blazes painted on trees along the roadside! Overall I feel this place has a lot of potential to be a great place to hike but something really needs to be done about all the horse mess in the area!</div>
